Altenburg Residential Castle

Altenburg Castle Museum and Playing Card Museum

Altenburg Castle is a multifaceted architectural ensemble with almost a thousand years of history. This results in excitement, contrast, and aesthetic appeal in equal measure for today's visitor.

As a castle and administrative center, the complex once served as a temporary residence for kings, emperors, and electors. In 1455, the castle was the scene of the legendary Saxon Prince Robbery. Later, the Dukes of Saxe-Altenburg resided here in two hereditary lines.

Today's appearance is mainly the result of the baroque remodeling and extension from 1706 to 1744. Princely living quarters with historic stuccowork, ceiling paintings, and wall decorations, some of which were reshaped in the 19th century, create a versatile ensemble. The late Gothic Castle Church with the Trost organ from 1739 is striking. The beginnings of the current Castle Museum and Playing Card Museum date back to 1920. It was not until 1923 that the playing card section was added. The collections are primarily based on the former ducal armory and antiquities chamber.

Various genres of arts and crafts, such as East Asian porcelains, but also paintings are essential components of the collections. The porcelain collection of Bernhard August von Lindenau (1779-1854) is a highlight of the collection and exhibition. An impressive testimony to princely collecting activity is the Sibyl Cabinet, created in 1734/1735, which houses porcelain and other works of art.
