Molsdorf Palace
A baroque treasure in the countryside
In the district of Molsdorf, just a few kilometers southwest of Erfurt, stands Molsdorf Palace - an impressive example of Baroque architecture surrounded by extensive gardens. Anyone interested in architecture, art and history will be taken on a fascinating journey.
A pleasure palace with an eventful history
The origins of the estate date back to the 13th century, when a moated castle was built on this site. The complex owes its current splendor to the diplomat Gustav Adolph von Gotter, who acquired the estate in 1734 and transformed it into a prestigious pleasure palace. The magnificent garden façade and the elaborately designed interiors, in particular the imposing ballroom on the Beletage, reflect the social status of their owner. Elaborate stucco work and impressive wall and ceiling paintings adorn the rooms and transport visitors to the glamorous world of the Baroque era.
After several changes of ownership, Molsdorf Castle was opened as a museum in 1966. Today, guests can not only admire the historical room furnishings, but also experience changing special exhibitions. A particular highlight is the erotica collection, which is unique in Thuringia and impressively underlines Gotter's vision of a pleasure palace. In addition, works by the Thuringian painter Otto Knöpfer (1911-1993), whose landscapes and still lifes are firmly established in 20th century art history, are exhibited on the mezzanine floor. Concerts, lectures and cultural events round off the varied program.
Molsdorf Palace Park - harmony between Baroque and Romanticism
The palace park in Molsdorf masterfully combines the elements of a baroque garden with the romantic design ideas of the 18th and 19th centuries. Originally, the layout followed the strict geometric style with ornate broderie parterres and symmetrical bosquets. Later, under the direction of the Duke of Saxe-Gotha and the court gardener Johann Rudolph Eyserbeck, the garden was transformed into a landscaped park: Curved paths, a picturesque pond and natural vegetation were added, while the Baroque main axis was preserved as the visual axis.
Today, the palace park invites visitors to take a relaxing stroll and experience the fine balance between formal garden art and natural landscaping. Historic sculptures and architectural elements blend harmoniously into the picture and make the park an inspiring experience for culture and nature lovers alike.
