Sondershausen Residential Palace

A residential palace with an impressive history

The imposing residential castle of the Counts and Princes of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen towers high above the market square in Sondershausen. Its history dates back to the 13th century. Originally built as a medieval castle, it developed into a magnificent palace over the centuries, combining various architectural styles from the Renaissance to historicism. Today, Sondershausen Residential Palace , the stables and the octagonal house form a unique architectural ensemble and dominate the town's skyline.

A palace full of treasures

Since 1952, the castle has been home to one of the most important museums in northern Thuringia. Particularly worth seeing is the Golden Coach, a magnificent state carriage from the early 18th century, which is exhibited in the historic coach houses with dummy horses. The collection of Abtsbessingen faience impresses with artistic tureens, fruit and animal-shaped jars and pieces of representative service. Music lovers can marvel at an exquisite collection of musical instruments, including the signed Harras harpsichord. The museum is complemented by extraordinary exhibits such as the satirical world map Monde Nouvelle Papistique from 1562 or the mysterious Püstrich, a medieval bronze figure whose function remains a mystery to this day.

A park to stroll through and discover

The palace is surrounded by an extensive landscaped park that extends over 30 hectares. Originally laid out as a pleasure garden, it was transformed into an impressive landscape park in the 19th century under the direction of the court gardener Tobias Ekart and the garden artist Eduard Petzold. Visitors can stroll along quiet paths, discover historic buildings such as the charming octagonal house or relax by idyllic ponds.

A particular highlight is the orangery, where exotic plants such as pineapples once thrived. The harmonious combination of garden art and princely architecture invites you to take relaxing walks and make cultural discoveries.

Immerse yourself in history

Sondershausen Residential Palace is more than just a historic building - it is an outstanding example of Thuringian residential culture. The magnificent rooms, valuable art collections and beautifully landscaped park offer visitors a deep insight into history and make the visit an unforgettable experience.
