Duke Georg II of Sachsen-Meiningen

As the so-called “theatre duke” Georg II was an outstanding personality among the sovereigns of Sachsen-Meiningen.
He revolutionised and had a lasting influence on German and European theatre.
When he became duke in 1866 he started reorganising the court theatre and orchestra and thus created the prerequisites for the high artistic quality and superb tours of both companies.
Apart from his residence in Meiningen he also made alterations to his country seats, as for example Altenstein and Heldburg.
