Günther XXI. von Schwarzburg-Blankenburg

The Thuringian count was a liegeman of Ludwig der Bayer, a successful diplomat and commander.
After Ludwig’s death in 1349 he was elected as German king; however, he could not assert himself against his opponent, Karl IV of Luxembourg.
In addition, Günther was taken seriously ill and abdicated.
He died already in July 1349 whereupon Karl IV had him buried with royal honours at Frankfurt cathedral.
