Special exhibition

Sterne über Paris - Sergio Birga and modernity Lindenau Museum in the Prinzenpalais of the Residenzschloss
May 20 to August 10, 2025

When Sergio Birga (1940-2021), originally from Florence, came to Paris in the 1960s, he began to experiment passionately and restlessly with printmaking techniques and forms of painting. His encounters with the artists Otto Dix and Conrad Felixmüller were formative and were followed by visits and correspondence as well as intimate portraits and studies. This first museum exhibition of his work in Germany sheds light on Birga's fascination with modern art, Franz Kafka's literary work and his great love of the starry sky over Paris.

Exquisite sponge cake - Cosima Göpfert
April 4 to August 10, 2025

The Thuringian artist Cosima Göpfert is known for transforming important social and political themes into playful porcelain objects. In this special exhibition, she conquers the ballroom of the Neues Palais and takes over the large table with her seemingly simple but artistically designed porcelain buns and rolls. Her works are combined with historical Thuringian porcelain from the Palace Museum's collection and set in an exciting dialog with the portraits of the Schwarzburg royal family. In this way, Cosima Göpfert invites us to reflect on the difference between wealth and poverty, pomp and modesty.

And won't you dear sun come soon
Scenic anniversary concert to mark 500 years of the Peasants' War with the SospirAtem ensemble. Rittersaal, Burgk Castle | € 18,00, reduced € 15,00, children and pupils free* It's about the commemoration of a war - the Peasants' War. But it's actually about people. SospirAtem is an ensemble based in Leipzig that was founded ten years ago at the local music academy and consists of a harp, recorder, violin and vocals. Shaken up by the unrest and wars on our planet, Ensemble 2025 takes a thoughtful look at the Peasants' War and spans a musical program right into the realities of life in the 21st century. War remains war, always remains war - whether 500 years ago or today in the crisis regions of the world. Not only the voices from the 16th century have their say in the concert, Ukrainian women are also invited to collaborate and report on their experiences. These texts are incorporated into the program in lyrical or prosaic form.

Musical sighs of peace
Concert with Capella Jenensis and works by Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, Heinrich Schütz and contemporaries. With early baroque works for violin, viola da gamba, violone, theorbo and organ, the musically intense concert program takes up the desire for peace, which was intensively set to music after the end of the Thirty Years' War - a theme that is more topical than ever in view of numerous ongoing wars. Works by Johann Heinrich Schmelzer, Andreas Oswald, Johann Nicolai and Adam Drese will be performed, many of which are included in the valuable Gotha manuscript collection “Partiturbuch Ludwig”. The baroque ensemble Capella Jenensis has dedicated itself to the rediscovery of Thuringian music in particular and performs the emotionally moving works of the concert on historical instruments. Grief and joie de vivre were set to music in equal measure by the composers and invite you to enjoy, but also to reflect. Castle Church | € 20, reduced € 15*

Introduction to the operatic pastiche “In search of the best world”
Liebhabertheater Kochberg Castle

5:00 p.m.

“In search of the best world”
An operatic pastiche about muses, fields and bankruptcy

We are not the only ones to experience times of crisis. The period at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century was characterized by wars, the worst climate catastrophe of recent centuries and the associated economic crises. During this time, Carl von Stein, who had been influenced by Goethe as a child and was active in many artistic fields, transformed the Kochberg estate with courage, energy and inventiveness from 1796 to 1830 into a court of muses with a landscape park and theater and created a total work of art: a unique symbiosis of agriculture/economy, nature and art. We are making this testimony to the art of living, in which we now work in respectful succession, the subject of a specially developed opera pastiche. The texts are based, among other things, on Carl's memoirs and letters. The music is borrowed from 18th and early 19th century composers and musical comedies from Carl's circle. Albert Methfessel composed especially for Carl's Liebhabertheater, where the opera pasticcio can now be experienced. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

1525: Peasants' War in the Henneberg region One event - five perspectives: Castles
April 13 to November 2, 2025

To mark the 500th anniversary, five museums in the Henneberg region in what is now southern Thuringia and northern Bavaria are organizing a joint exhibition. At the German Castle Museum Veste Heldburg, the focus is naturally on castles. Many of them were plundered and destroyed during the Peasants' War in the Henneberger Land. But there were also many castles that were spared. Why? Why were some castles rebuilt and others not? These questions are also explored with comparisons from other regions. The exhibition features not only panels and exhibits, but also media stations, dioramas, models and hands-on stations.

Special exhibition

With royal eyes
Queen Victoria visits Molsdorf Palace.
June 8 to October 26, 2025

In August 1845, a young queen takes a Sunday trip to Molsdorf - just as many guests, young and old, still do today. Victoria also visits the castle, not as head of state of Great Britain and Ireland, but as a private individual. In 1845, the house belonged to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, from which Prince Albert, the Queen's beloved husband, descended. The exhibition will now show what Victoria saw in Molsdorf for the first time. Visitors are lent “royal eyes” and are not deprived of the corresponding royal souvenirs. These are now valuable historical pictorial documents. The watercolors and photographs reproduce the original, late baroque interior of Molsdorf Castle, which goes back to Gustav Adolf von Gotter as the most important owner and builder. Take a royal look!

The last prince - Günther Viktor von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt
April 17 to November 30, 2025

Schwarzburg Castle, Kaisersaal building

Günther Viktor, the last Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, who had also ruled the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen in personal union since 1909, died on April 16, 1925. To mark the centenary of his death, the special exhibition in the Kaisersaal building at Schwarzburg Castle is dedicated to the various facets of his person and the time in which he lived, which was characterized by great upheavals. Günther Viktor, who was rather shy but interested in art and hunting, took over the regency in 1890 after the sudden death of his cousin, who had remained childless. As one of the last reigning princes in the empire, he abdicated in 1918 and lived in seclusion with his wife at the dynasty's ancestral castle in Schwarzburg. For the first time, an exhibition is dedicated solely to the last reigning Schwarzburg prince, who still has a strong presence in the historical consciousness of the regional population.

Fairy tale poet - Hans Christian Andersen in Weimar
until November 1, 2025

Tiefurt Castle and Kirms-Krackow House, free admission

He became famous for his fairy tales, but he was also a visual artist: Hans Christian Andersen. He continuously created drawings, collages, picture books and silhouettes. The traveling exhibition of the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation and the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, which can be seen at Kirms-Krackow House and Tiefurt Palace to mark the 220th birthday of the famous Dane, shows Andersen's artistic diversity and creative freedom in his approach to art.
