Grand Duke Carl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach

Under Carl August, his small state rose to become the most important state in Thuringia. He had the Residential Castle, which had been in ruins since 1774, rebuilt. His son's marriage to the daughter of the Russian tsar, Maria Pavlovna, secured the political survival during the time of the Napoleonic Wars and gave Carl August the title of Grand Duke at the Congress of Vienna. The residential city became a literary center of Europe.
