Günther XXI. of Schwarzburg-Blankenburg

The Thuringian count was a liegeman of Ludwig the Bavarian, a successful diplomat and military commander. After Ludwig’s death in 1349, he was elected German king, but he was unable to prevail against his opponent, Karl IV of Luxembourg. In addition, Günther fell seriously ill and renounced the crown. He died as early as July 1349, whereupon Karl IV had him buried with royal honors in Frankfurt Cathedral.
