A day of adventure for the whole family
The Thuringian Castles Children's Day has long been a firm fixture in the annual calendar and this year, on September 20 - World Children's Day - invites families on an exciting journey through time.
In recent years, this special day has delighted numerous visitors young and old with unique insights into the fascinating world of castles. Whether it's hidden rooms, exciting castle rallies or creative hands-on activities such as comic drawing, paper-making and costume design - Castle Children's Day offers unforgettable experiences for the whole family.
Once again this year, you can look forward to a discovery tour full of adventures and surprises. Stay tuned to see what awaits you!

Altenburg Residential Palace
15. Historical Palace Spectacle with camp life, fire magic, and knight fights
At the 15th Historical Palace Spectacle, craftsmen and merchants' stalls recreate everyday life in a historical market. Visitors can watch wood turners, leatherworkers, oil, watercolor, and porcelain painters, needle binders, papermakers, furriers, and many others at work. The Altenburg association “Barbaren Podegrodici” will also demonstrate how chain mail was made in the Middle Ages. The youngest visitors can make their own candles, create paper, play medieval board games, paint ceramics, try their hand at archery and crossbow shooting, or ride the historic carousel, which is powered purely by muscle power. Musical entertainment and refreshments will be provided.

Of course, no castle would be complete without knights! The “Knights of Osterburg” set up camp in the fortifications and invite visitors to marvel at the life of knights and learn about knightly virtues.

At 11:00 a.m., young and old alike are invited to immerse themselves in the story of “Theo Rattenratz” with the Olifant Ilmenau Theater.

Buttons – Craft workshop
Let your creativity run wild and design your own button. You can choose from a variety of motifs or develop your own design and decorate it with glitter at the end.
All children (up to 18 years of age) are admitted free of charge.
In addition to the button workshop (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), interested children can go on a discovery tour of the Summer Palace during opening hours (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or use the children's audio guide. They will meet various residents of the palace who have interesting, funny, and mysterious things to tell them.

Palace kids – feel like a prince and princess!
What was life like for children at the royal court? Feel like a prince and princess at the castle this afternoon. Learn a baroque dance and feel like the children of the royal family with costumes and wigs. You can also go on a treasure hunt and try out the new Actionbound at the Natural History Museum.
What was life like in a castle?
Have you ever wondered how one became a knight? How heavy a horse's load is when carrying armor, or why horseshoes bring good luck? Answers to these and other questions will be provided to young knights and their families on this day at the Princely World of Experience at Schwarzburg Palace.

Backpacking trip – On the road with Fritz von Stein
Fritz von Stein guides you through the Park on the Ilm and introduces you to his favorite places. A research notebook, magnifying glass, binoculars, a poem by Goethe, and games are included in your backpack for your exciting adventure. For children ages 6–12.

Together with Barbara Brück, you will embark on a journey of discovery and explore seven special places from the Reformation period. Barbara will not only show you what it looked like here 450 years ago, she will also introduce you to the most famous people of that time: the Ernestine ruling family, the court painter Lucas Cranach, and, of course, the reformer and Bible translator Martin Luther! For children aged 6–12.

Discover the interactive theme wall in the Co-Labor and design your own little world at the interactive station. Test your skills on the table tennis table against personalities from Weimar Classicism or play your way through their exciting world of ideas with classic croquet. If you still have energy left, you can test your dexterity with outdoor games. Refreshing drinks invite you to relax in between activities.
