Burgk Castle

An impressive monument on the Upper Saale

Situated on the banks of the Upper Saale, Burgk Castle combines historical heritage, artistic masterpieces and cultural diversity in a fascinating way. Once the hunting and summer residence of the Reuss princes of the older line, it is now one of the most important cultural treasures in Eastern Thuringia and the Vogtland region. The imposing late medieval fortifications lend the castle a defensive character, while the harmonious interplay of architecture and landscape creates a very special atmosphere.

Historic living culture and fascinating treasures

Behind the simple castle facade lies a richly furnished interior that reflects centuries of European art and living culture. The originally preserved rooms such as the magnificent Knights' Hall, the White Room, the State Bedroom and the castle chapel bring the past to life. Ornate furniture, precious paintings, valuable tapestries and an impressive collection of trophies and weapons bear witness to the castle's former glory.

Architectural features and musical highlights

The Knights' Hall is a true masterpiece: its impressive wooden ceiling, which has no supports or pillars, was suspended directly from the roof truss - a rare architectural construction that gives the room exceptional acoustics. Today, the hall is used as an atmospheric concert hall.

The early baroque castle chapel is home to a very special treasure: the Gottfried Silbermann organ from 1743. As one of the few organs by the famous master to have retained its original baroque sound, it fascinates music lovers from all over the world.

Another highlight is the historic castle kitchen with its monumental fireplace measuring 21.50-metres in height - one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

A place of extraordinary collections

Burgk Castle has been a museum since 1952 and is home to three extraordinary special collections:

  • One of the largest ex-libris collections in Europe - with around 80,000 sheets, it is a true paradise for lovers of these small works of art.
  • A comprehensive library on the history of the Reussians and the Reussian region, supplemented by specialist art-historical literature.
  • An impressive collection of artists' books and original graphic journals, which the museum regularly presents in temporary exhibitions.
