Friedenstein Palace and Ducal Park
The Friedenstein universe in Gotha
Friedenstein Palace rises majestically above Gotha - one of the largest preserved castle complexes of the early Baroque period and an outstanding example of Thuringian history. Situated in the middle of an extensive park, this architectural masterpiece impresses with its historical splendor, its diverse museums and one of the oldest baroque theaters in the world.
A palace with history
In 1643, during the Thirty Years' War, Duke Ernst I, known as “the Pious”, had Friedenstein Palace built. The residence was not only intended as a symbol of stability and peace, but also as a place for science, art and culture. The castle's art chambers were the origin of one of the most important collections in Germany. Today, Friedenstein Palace stands as an impressive example of ducal residence culture and takes visitors on a journey through history.
Fascinating museums and collections
The museum landscape at Friedenstein Palace impresses with its extraordinary diversity:
- The palace museum impresses with ornately designed state rooms from the Baroque, Rococo and Classicism periods. Visitors can admire valuable furniture, magnificent tapestries and the finest Meissen porcelain.
- The Ducal Museum, a magnificent building from the 19th century, houses masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer, Peter Paul Rubens and Caspar David Friedrich as well as impressive sculptures by Jean-Antoine Houdon.
- The Gotha Historical Museum provides fascinating insights into the development of the town and the duchy and presents the everyday life of bourgeois society in contrast to the splendor of the court.
- The Museum of Nature displays the dukes' impressive natural history collections, including prehistoric fossils and rare animal specimens.
A theater experience like in the 17th century
A special highlight is the Ekhof Theater, the world's only preserved baroque theater with still-functioning stage machinery from 1683. Every summer, the Ekhof Festival delights visitors with unique performances that bring the theater world of past centuries back to life.
