Schwarzburg Castle rises on an elongated rocky promontory above the Schwarza Valley. The castle complex dates back to the ancestral castle of the Counts and later Imperial Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.
To the south of the castle, at the beginning of the 18th century, the Emperor's Hall building was erected as a summer house with the so-called Emperor's Hall on the upper floor and a wintering area for the orangery plants on the first floor.
In front of the Emperor's Hall building was the baroque Castle Garden. With its transformation in the 19th century into a landscape garden, its regular basic form was abandoned.
After further redesigns in the 20th century, the landscape garden was lost, as was the 18th-century design.
Taking a historical garden plan from 1744 as a basis, it was possible to restore the fundamental structure of the baroque garden complex in 2000. The main structural elements were incorporated using modern materials. Thus, a regular garden with lawn parterres and a fountain pool was created. A newly planted tree grove complements the garden layout. On the square in front of the Emperor's Hall building, orangery plants are arranged during the summer months.
